Numbers

Below is a short summary of the subject. If you don’t know how to readAlbanian yet, please see the ‘Pronunciation guide’.From one to ten…
    1: nj
    2: dy
    3: tre
    4: katr
    5: pes
    6: gjasht
    7: shtat
    8: tet
    9: nnt
    10: dhjet… and then the teens…
The numbers 11 – 19 are formed by adding ‘mb’ + ‘dhjet’ to numbers 1 – 10. ‘mb’ means ‘over’. ‘Twenty’ is ‘njzet’.

    11: njmbdhjet (one-over-ten)
    12: dymbdhjet (two-over-ten)
    13: trembdhjet (three-over-ten)
    14: katrmbdhjet (four-over-ten)
    15: pesmbdhjet (five-over-ten)
    16: gjashtmbdhjet (six-over-ten)
    17: shtatmbdhjet (seven-over-ten)
    18: tetmbdhjet (eight-over-ten)
    19: nntmbdhjet (nine-over-ten)
    20: njzet

Put another way, ‘mbdhjet’ is practically equal to ‘teen’.

… moving on: up to a hundred
The multiples of ten are formed by number + ‘dhjet’. The following list contains the multiples of ten.We already saw that 10 and 20 were respectively ‘dhjet and ‘njzet’.

    10: dhjet
    20: njzet
    30: tridhjet
40: dyzet (but ‘katrdhjet’ is sometimes used as well)
    50: pesdhjet
    60: gjashtdhjet
    70: shtatdhjet
    80: tetdhjet
    90: nntdhjet
    100: njqind

    Note that:
    (1) The multiples of ten seem similar to the teens. However, the multiples of ten do not have ‘mb’. So, 16 is ‘gjashtmbdhjet’, but 60 is ‘gjashtdhjet’.
    (2) 20 and 40 are exceptions from the general rule (number + ‘dhjet’). Remember them. Remember also that some Albanian speakers use ‘katrdhjet’ instead of ‘dyzet’.
    (3) 30 has an ‘i’, not an ‘e’. It is like this: ‘tridhjet’, not like this: ‘tredhjet’.

The numbers between 20 and 30 are simple. Note that ‘e’ means ‘and’.

    21: njzet e nj
    22: njzet e dy
    23: njzet e tre
    24: njzet e katr
    25: njzet e pes
    26: njzet e gjasht
    27: njzet e shtat
    28: njzet e tet
    29: njzet e nnt

The numbers between 30 and 40 are similar: instead of ‘njzet’ you should use ‘tridhjet’. And then similarly with the numbers between 40 and 50, and so on, up to 100.

    The hundreds
The word for a ‘hundred’ is ‘qind’. So you can easily predict the following list:

    100: njqind
    200: dyqind
    300: treqind
    400: katrqind
    500: pesqind
    600: gjashtqind
    700: shtatqind
    800: tetqind
    900: nntqind
1000: nj mij (note the space)

    A ‘thousand’ is nj ‘mij’.
